Rose Choules – Moccasin Atelier
Early on a saturday morning in February I leave the holiday cottage we have rented in the charming village of Marhamchurch in Bude Cornwall and set out on the 5 minute drive to Rose Choules studio for my One to One Moccasin making course.
Like most people I started thinking about what I wanted to change in my life on the 1st january. Having worked in the footwear industry for the last 14 years as a footwear designer and having thought about getting more hands on again I decided to search for a footwear making course to re-awaken my footwear making skills.
After a rather disappointing search that only really highlighted courses in London or in the North of England, I was finally rewarded by stumbling on an article about a moccasin making atelier based not so far away in sunny Cornwall.
After contacting Rose and arranging a one to one course in late february My wife and I decided it would be a good break for all of us (me, my wife & our two dogs, Tilly & Monty). My wife is a coastal artist so we decided to book a week’s break in Cornwall and get creative together.
I have to say it’s been some years since I have embarked on any study especially on a one to one basis, but those fears where quickly put aside after meeting rose. Having working in the industry herself for some time we quickly found common ground and the conversation flowed.
Rose has worked within the footwear industry for the last ten years. She has trained with the ‘lastmakers’ at the historic John Lobb of St James’ Street, established the design direction of cult shoe brand pointer, and Rose was enlisted to design a custom line for Karen Walker’s S/S 2010 runway show in New York.
Her debut as ‘Rose Choules Moccasin Atelier’ was at a pop-up shop in Selfridges in November 2011. She was the winner of the 2011 ‘Footwear Friends Designer Award’
